How our sixth form meets the 16-19 study programme requirements
At our Academy, every Sixth Form student follows a full-time study programme that meets the Department for Education’s 16–19 requirements. Our aim is to provide a challenging academic curriculum alongside opportunities that develop character, skills, and readiness for higher education, training, or employment.
Academic Study
-
Students typically study three A Levels (or equivalent Level 3 qualifications).
-
Each subject has 300 minutes of taught lessons per week, providing the depth and rigour required for success.
-
Where students have not yet achieved a grade 4 in GCSE English or Maths, we ensure these qualifications are part of their programme.
Directed Independent Study
-
All students complete 6 hours of directed independent study each week.
-
This time is structured to help students develop effective study habits, consolidate learning, and extend their knowledge beyond the classroom.
Enrichment and Wider Skills
-
Every student participates in 100 minutes of enrichment activities each week.
-
These may include leadership opportunities, volunteering, sport, performing arts, and other experiences designed to develop confidence, resilience, and transferable skills.
-
An Extended Project Qualification (EPQ) is also available for those who wish to enhance their research, critical thinking, and academic writing skills.
Careers, Guidance and Work Experience
-
Students receive personalised guidance and support with university, apprenticeship, and employment pathways.
-
We provide opportunities for work experience, employer engagement and external speakers, ensuring students are well-prepared for their next steps.
Pastoral Support
-
Dedicated tutor time and a tailored Sixth Form pastoral programme support student well-being, personal development, and preparation for adult life.
A Full-Time Programme
Taken together, the teaching hours, independent study, enrichment, and personal development opportunities ensure every student’s programme meets — and in many cases exceeds — the government’s expectations for a full-time 16–19 study programme.
