What are Knowledge Organisers?

Knowledge Organisers (KOs) are concise, structured documents that outline the essential knowledge students need to master for a specific topic or unit. They typically include key vocabulary, definitions, core concepts (often referred to as "powerful knowledge"), and home learning tasks. KOs serve as a single reference point for both teaching and revision.

Why should they be used?

• Clarity and Focus: KOs distill the curriculum into its most critical components, helping students focus on what matters most.
  • Memory and Retrieval: They support spaced practice and retrieval strategies, which are proven to enhance long-term memory.
  • Equity: All students, regardless of background, have access to the same core knowledge.
  • Parental Engagement: KOs provide a clear overview for parents to support learning at home.

Why use a standard template across the school?

• Consistency: A uniform format ensures all students and staff know where to find information, reducing cognitive load.
  • Quality Assurance: It helps maintain high standards across departments.
  • Ease of Use: Teachers can collaborate more effectively, and students can navigate KOs more easily when formats are consistent.

How should they be used?

• In Lessons: As a reference tool to reinforce key concepts and vocabulary.
  • For Homework: Weekly recall quizzes and tasks aligned with the KO content.
  • For Revision: As a go-to resource for preparing for assessments.
  • For Planning: Teachers can use KOs to ensure curriculum coherence and progression.

How are they implemented across the school?

At the beginning of a half term, each year group will receive one Knowledge Organiser Booklet for that half term containing a Knowledge Organiser for each of their subjects. They will also receive one Quiz Booklet that is linked directly to the Knowledge Organiser booklet. The Quiz Booklet will be used as homework or Do Now low stakes retrieval tool.
