PHYSICAL EDUCATION KS4

GSCE

GCSE Physical Education is a combination of theoretical and practical work.  It demands effort and application in both areas.

The theory part of the course is split into 4 sections:

Factors affecting participation and performance.

The relationship between health, fitness and physical activity.

Risk assessment is physical activity.

Analysis of performance (coursework).

These theoretical elements of the course are extremely important and are worth 40% of your final marks - this section of the course demands real commitment.  Homework is set each week.

The practical part of the course is worth 60% of your final mark.  To be successful on the course you will need to have talent across a wide range of activities as you will be assessed in four activities.

You must take into consideration that to do well on the GCSE P.E. course you must achieve well in both the theory and practical      elements.  The course will suit those students who are good at sport, have a genuine interest in the wider aspects of sport and have excellent P.E. participation record over the last three years.

The following sports are normally offered during the course:-    soccer, netball, badminton, table-tennis, basketball, hockey, tennis and rounders.  Certain other sports can be graded during the course as part of your practical grade, e.g. athletics and cricket.

Career Opportunities and Progression to 6th Form/Further Education

The leisure industry continues to grow strongly so a qualification in Physical Education could be of tremendous advantage when applying for jobs in this area.  Should you wish to study Physical Education to greater depth, it can be continued in our own 6th Form where it is offered at ‘AS' and ‘A' level.

In other areas of the working world, employers are looking for individuals who have had a wide range of experience and who have worked in groups and teams to achieve a common aim.

PHYSICAL EDUCATION KS4

BTEC Sport

You will be aware that  NAME is studying for the  BTEC First Certificate  and Diploma  in SPORT.  The course is the equivalent of 4 GCSEs at grade A-C and requires 7 hours of  lesson time per week.

Unlike subjects that rely purely on an exam in the summer term of year 11, the BTEC course has no examinations and the continuous class work assessment starts immediately in year 10. This means attendance at all lessons, full commitment to study and meeting deadlines is absolutely essential from the first day of the course in September.

In year 10 students study 3 units towards achieving the Certificate in Sport which is worth 2 of the 4 GCSEs. In year 11 students go on to study 3 more units, thus achieving the Diploma and the remaining 2 GCSEs. Possible grades in BTEC are Distinction, Merit or Pass and are in line with GCSE grades of A, B and C. There is no grade below C. Students failing to pass the course receive no certification.

This course is designed for students who have a keen interest in sport and who may consider future employment in the sport/leisure industry.

The course consists of 6 units which are:-

The body in Sport.

Health, safety and injury in Sport.

3.         Practical Sport

4.         Technical skills and tactical awareness for Sport

5.         Nutrition for sports performance

Fitness for sports performance

Although most of the course is theoretical in nature there is practical work involved and a good level of personal practical ability would be an advantage.
