KS5 A Level Film
AS Level Film Studies - WJEC
What will I learn?
During the first year, students develop the skills needed to analyse films critically and complete a ‘micro analysis’ for part of their coursework. Students are introduced to practical work through a series of workshops including camerawork and editing, leading onto the production of a short film! The first exam question focuses on ‘Producers and Audiences’; lessons and learning revolve around the film industry. The second exam question revolves around an element of British cinema (this year we are studying British horror films!) and the third question concerns itself with American cinema (students will complete an in-depth study of two related American films). The second year of the A level is similar in form to the first, with a short film project accompanied by a research project making up the coursework. The exam again consists of three questions: one on an element of World Cinema where students get an opportunity to study films they may not have encountered previously (this year we are studying films from the French New Wave). The second question is on documentary filmmaking and the third is related to a critical study of a chosen film.
Throughout the course student learning is supplemented by a varied and challenging screening schedule.
