KS5 A Level Art & Design

 

AS & A2 Art and Design - Edexcel
 
What will I learn?
 
The A level qualification consists of 4 units; during the AS and A2 years you will complete two coursework units and two externally set assignments. You will have opportunities to generate practical work, ideas and research from primary and contextual sources. You will experiment with media and processes, and develop and refine your ideas to present final outcomes in a range of media including, drawing, painting, sculpture, ICT, printing, digital and mixed media. The externally set assignment’s consist of one broad-based thematic starting point and encourages independence in the development of ideas, intentions and response. In the second year of the course you will undertake a self-directed project which incorporates practical work with a written personal study. Alongside your studies you will have the opportunity to take part in Life Drawing classes and visit Art Galleries and Museums. The course will help you to build a comprehensive portfolio of work to progress to further courses or employment.
 
How will I be assessed?
 
Unit 1: AS Art and Design Coursework: worth 60% of your final AS grades. This unit is made up of several different project briefs and will be internally set and assessed by your Art teacher.
Unit 2: Externally set Assignment in Art and Design: (Controlled test) worth 40% of your final AS
grade. An 8 hour, 2 day examination with 8 weeks preparation time. The theme of this unit is set by the
exam board and is assessed by your Art teacher.  
The AS makes up 50% of the overall Art and Design GCE, with a further two Units studied in the second A2 year: In the second year A2 level, there are 2 Units of study:
 
Unit 3: A2 Art and Design Coursework: worth 60% of your final A2 grade (which forms 30% of total A2 marks). This unit is student directed and incorporates Practical work with a written Personal Study.
Unit 4: Externally set Assignment in Art and Design: (Controlled test) worth 40% of your final A2 grade (which forms 20% of A2 marks). A 12 hour, 3 day examination with 8 weeks preparation time. The theme of this unit is set by the exam board and is assessed by your Art teacher.
 
What can I do after I’ve completed the course?
 
This course will help to prepare you for a career in the Creative Industries, including: graphic design, fashion designer, set designer, props maker, copy writer, animator and public artist. This qualification will provide opportunities for you to develop a range of skills and techniques, qualities and attitudes essential for successful performance in working life.
Many of our students go on to study an Art Foundation and a University course later on.
Foundation courses: These are one year courses intended to give students a broad range of experience in both 2D and 3D Art and Design specialism’s. They enable students to discover what particular area of art and design they wish to study in further depth. For example you may specialise in one of the following areas: Animation, Media Production, Film, Graphics, Interior Design, Illustration, Fashion and Textiles, Furniture design..to name a few!
Degree Courses in the Creative Arts: There are many areas of study available relating to Art and Design at University. Speak to your Art teacher for more information.
