KS4 GCSE Art

GCSE Art and Design - Edexcel
Year 11 GCSE work

What will I learn?

The GCSE covers a range of creative activities and in-depth projects. Drawing will form the basis for all work and you will be encouraged to work from direct observation. You will have the opportunity to experiment with a range of materials, tools and techniques and will produce high quality outcomes in both 2 and 3 dimensions. The course will develop your visual language skills and ideas in response to a given theme. You will work from primary and secondary sources on subject matter such as ‘Metamorphosis of the Face’ and use a variety of media including painting, drawing, ICT, printing, digital and mixed media. You will analyse and evaluate the work of influential artists, cultures and movements. The course will help you to build a comprehensive portfolio of work to progress to further courses or employment.

How will I be assessed?

There are just twopartsto the Art and Design GCSE course:
Unit 1: Personal Portfolio in Art and Design: (Coursework unit) worth 60% of your final grade.
This unit is made up of several different project briefs and will be internally set and assessed by your
Art teacher.
Unit 2: Externally set Assignment in Art and Design: (Controlled test) worth 40% of your final grade. A 10 hour, 2 day examination with 8 weeks preparation time. The theme of this unit is set by the exam board and is assessed by your Art teacher.

What can I do after I’ve completed the course?

Many of our students go on to Post 16 to study AS/A2 or the BTEC Extended Diploma in Art and Design, many of them have gone onto study an Art Foundation and University course later on. A GCSE in Art will help you find jobs in television, advertising, architecture, computer graphics, games and software design, the fashion industry, printing, publishing, media, display, photography, design, jewellery, journalism, sculpture, ceramics and teaching – to name a few.
