KS3 Yr 9 Art & Design
Year 9 Art and Design

What will I learn?
Art is taught in a 100 minute session, once per the two week timetable, in mixed-ability tutor groups. You will keep a sketchbook in order to record what has been directly observed, imagined or remembered, You will gather resources and critically evaluate the work of others. Over the year you will complete three projects including two thematically developed units and a final unit which has a Work Related Learning outcome. The ‘Self-Identity Project’ is based on the work of the famous female artist Frida Kahlo, you will research and analyse her work and create your own self-identity inspired portrait. During the ‘Street Graphics and Body Decoration’ project you will research examples of tribal art, graffiti and stencil art from around the world. You will use primary observation skills to develop your own street art stencil design or collagraph print. During the final project you will respond to a work-related design challenge using the skills and knowledge developed in the Street Art project. This year’s work related challenge is a cross-curricular Art and Music project where you will create Street Art inspired hip-hop house tracks in music and create an eye-catching CD cover design in Art.
How will I be assessed?
All Art skills, addressed by the National Curriculum, are taught within a given theme and assessed both in class and for independent learning homework tasks. Assessment includes: Research, Use of Media, Making, Artists’ Research and Evaluating and Developing at NC level 6. Teacher and student self assessment is embedded into the course with a focus on Literacy which is supported by on-going Art vocabulary recorded into sketchbooks. Homework is set once every two weeks to support the development of work completed in class. You will also undertake an annual Art exam which assesses your observational recording skills and art vocabulary.

Throughout the unit you will have the opportunity to develop your Personal Learning and Thinking Skills.
