KS3 Yr 8 Art & Design
Year 8 Art and Design

What will I learn?
The Year 8 Art curriculum is taught as part of the MediaArts rotation comprising: Art, Drama, Music, Resistant Materials and Textiles. Classes are taught in mixed-ability, single sex groups. The Year 8 topic is entitled: Once Upon a Time….‘Great Adaptations’. This unit builds on the foundation Year 7 ‘Visual Skills’ unit and focuses on developing Art skills and critical and contextual thinking with the core PLTS underpinning learning. During this unit you will produce a modern adaptation of a classic composition; a range of outcomes will be produced including digital photography and prints, paintings and photomontage. The contextual themes addressed during this unit include a visit to the National Portrait Gallery or Dulwich Picture Gallery. You will explore Narrative Art themes across 20th/21st Century Art including Symbolism, Pop Art, African Art and Graphic Art.
How will I be assessed?
All Art skills, addressed by the National Curriculum, are taught within a given theme and assessed both in class and for independent learning homework tasks. Assessment includes: Research, Use of Media, Making, Artists’ Research and Evaluating and Developing at NC level 5. Teacher and student self assessment is embedded into the course with a focus on Literacy which is supported by on-going Art vocabulary recorded into sketchbooks. Homework is set weekly to support the development of work completed in class. You will also undertake an annual Art exam which assesses your observational recording skills and art vocabulary.
Personal learning and thinking skills (PLTS)
Throughout the unit you will have the opportunity to develop your Personal Learning and Thinking Skills. A range of activities are embedded into the programme of study designed to develop your key skills including: Independent enquiry, Team work, Creative thinking, Self-management, Independent Enquiry, Participation and Reflection abilities. You will be assessed on your progress towards meeting the PLTS in on-going self-assessment throughout the MediaArts rotation.
What extra-curricular activities can I take part in?
In addition to the class work, students are set weekly independent homework tasks and are encouraged to join a number of Art clubs to develop their work including the Key Stage 3 Art club on Wednesday lunchtimes and the Gifted and Talented MediaArts club on Thursday evenings after school. You will also have the opportunity to attend an educational visit to the Dulwich Picture Gallery.
