KS3 Yr 7 Art & Design
Year 7 Art and Design

What will I learn?
In Year 7 Art is taught as part of the MediaArts rotation comprising: Art, Drama, Music, Resistant Materials and Textiles. Classes are taught in mixed-ability, single sex groups. You will be introduced to the Art Studio environment and its appropriate working practices. You will maintain a sketchbook in order to record what has been seen, imagined or remembered and to gather resources and materials. The ‘Visual Skills’ unit introduces you to foundation level Art skills and critical study. The theme of the project is based on the London Olympics 2012, including sport based still life, space and movement drawings and logo design. The second part of the project helps students to focus on producing one final outcome. The students work in groups to produce collaborative pieces in the form of mosaics.
How will I be assessed?
All Art skills, addressed by the National Curriculum, are taught within a given theme and assessed both in class and for independent learning homework tasks. Assessment includes: Research, Use of Media, Making, Artists’ Research and Evaluating and Developing at NC level 4. Teacher and student self assessment is embedded into the course with a focus on Literacy which is supported by on-going Art vocabulary recorded into sketchbooks. Homework is set weekly to support the development of work completed in class. You will also undertake an annual Art exam which assesses your observational recording skills and art vocabulary.
Personal learning and thinking skills (PLTS)
Throughout the unit you will have the opportunity to develop your Personal Learning and Thinking Skills. A range of activities are embedded into the programme of study designed to develop your key skills including: Independent enquiry, Team work, Creative thinking, Self-management, Independent Enquiry, Participation and Reflection abilities. You will be assessed on your progress towards meeting the PLTS in on-going self-assessment throughout the MediaArts rotation.
What extra-curricular activities can I take part in?
In addition to the class work, students are set weekly independent homework tasks and are encouraged to join a number of Art clubs to develop their work including the Key Stage 3 Art club on Wednesday lunchtimes and the Gifted and Talented MediaArts club on Thursday evenings after school. You will also have the opportunity to attend an educational visit to the National Portrait Gallery.
